The idea for this theme came from exactly where you’ll think it came from after you solve it. But I’ll admit that the pay-off is a bit too easy, for reasons also explained in the puzzle. And I’d apologize for three prefix/suffix clues, at least one proper name I should have worked out of the grid and sundry other laziness but 16-Across will explain all.
